It might save time if I were to say this has been the hardest month of my life. It was so difficult dealing with Isaac’s death and funeral but these were followed by a Christmas Day without him. We tried to enjoy the day in tribute to him since he loved Christmas and his excitement was infectious. If only that was all I had to deal with. The roofer came to fix a leaking roof the day of Isaac’s funeral. Two days before Christmas a guy came to point the wall where the water was leaking into the kitchen and on the same day I had to call out a plumber because an outlet pipe had come loose and all my bathwater ended up on the kitchen floor. A week ago my computer started playing up and I couldn’t get Netflix on the television. Netflix has kept me going each morning through lockdown when my wife is resting in bed. So yesterday I had a guy move my router into the living room from the bedroom. This was a big improvement to my Wi-Fi speed but still no Netflix. I’ve managed all this quite well but am now ready to kill someone. Roll on tomorrow.

AMC the patchwork quilt

 Andy’s Man Club is like a patchwork quilt. It is made up of lots of different bits that come together to make something positive and functional. Last night I talked to people suffering from grief, family problems, physical ill health, and deep emotional trauma. Some had little to say, and some spoke at length. Most men in the group were gentle types who might not speak out in other situations. Some are content that their comments, brief as they are, are taken seriously and advice given. Often advice is redundant since they just need to say out loud how they are feeling. Those of us who are in long-term therapy can talk endlessly about the small steps we are taking to recover from childhood trauma. It is fascinating to listen to each contribution and to know we are making a difference. It is always good to meet new members but also to rotate people in the groups so that we all get to know each other. Isaac

 If my grandson had lived, he would have been 24 today. Last year his grandma and I were with him for his 23rd birthday, as we had been each year since he was born. He enjoyed his birthday, but he seemed a bit under the weather.  That was the last time we saw him before covid took him from us a week later. It’s been a tough year, and the closer we get to the anniversary of his death, the harder it is. Despite or maybe because of his various disabilities he was an amazing young man. He received the Cornwall Award from the scouts, which is their highest honour for bravery. His exuberance for life and joy of being with people were infectious. Isaac had nicknames for everyone, and I was no exception. I was the choir man because I sang in a male voice choir. I assume that influenced his decision to join his school choir.
